Sameroom is a cloud service that provides the interoperability plumbing necessary for teams on different chat platforms to communicate with each other.
Of course, the platforms don't actually have to be different—they can be exactly the same. For example, you may want to connect to another HipChat team from your HipChat team. I covered this topic in a post called "How to Work Across HipChat Teams With Ease".
In this post, I'll show you the best way to begin working with Sameroom from HipChat.
Due to certain limitations of the HipChat API, I highly recommend inviting a ”Sameroom Bot” account to your HipChat team, and using that bot account to work with Sameroom.
This may sound complicated, but it's a really simple process.
Step 1: Create a new HipChat user (name it Sameroom Bot). If your email address is firstname.lastname@example.org, you can use email@example.com for new user email.
Step 2: From HipChat Account API page sign in as the new user and create a new API token, with label "sameroom". You'll need
Manage Rooms, and
Step 3: Go to https://sameroom.io/accounts/signin/hipchat and paste the token.
Side note: You can help us lobby HipChat to make their API work nicer with Sameroom with a simple tweet—Click to tweet (you can edit before sending).
Create A Portal
Unless you already have a HipChat room you'd like to share, create one.
Then, go to Create-A-Portal page and select your room—this will create a Portal URL.
Email/Skype this URL to someone on the other team and ask them to connect.
